New Weekly Food Waste Collections to Start in Cambridgeshire from 2026

Starting after 31st March 2026, local councils across Cambridgeshire will introduce weekly food waste collections for households, making it easier to reduce food waste and help the environment.

Key Dates:

  • Fenland and Huntingdonshire District Councils will begin collections in March 2026.
  • Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire will start in April 2026.
  • East Cambridgeshire District Council will begin mid-2026.

This government-funded initiative includes new collection vehicles, kerbside bins, indoor caddies, and informative materials to support residents with the changes.

Why is this important?
Over 10 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK each year. By separating food waste, it can be sent to specialist facilities to generate energy rather than ending up in landfill. This process will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and power homes and businesses sustainably.

How will the new service work?

  • Households will receive separate containers for food waste. Some areas will also get separate bins for paper and cardboard.
  • Dry recycling will continue to be collected together in one bin.
  • Food waste will be collected weekly, rather than fortnightly, and separately from garden waste.
  • This will help reduce unpleasant smells in bins and improve recycling rates.

Get involved – Become a Food Waste Volunteer!
We’re launching a volunteer project from June 2025 to educate and inform residents about the new service. Volunteers will visit households to share information and answer questions. Full training and materials will be provided.

Other upcoming changes:

  • From March 2025, all businesses must separate food waste from other waste.
  • Packaging will have mandatory recyclability labelling.
